Laura Isabel Smith was a life-long resident of Athens, Georgia. She was the granddaughter of a former mayor of Athens and her father was one of the founders of Smith, Boley and Brown Realtors and Insurance. "Miss Laura", as she was affectionately known, was also a cousin of Dean William Tate's wife and had been part of their wedding.
